Friday Five

Happy Friday!  Work is busier than usual right now, so I'm looking forward to a completely free weekend.  The only tentative items on my agenda are Trader Joe's and the winter farmers' market.

1 - Raspberry Daquoise

Raspberry daquoise was my dessert of choice at Le RĂªve when I had dinner there with Erica this week.  This fantastic dessert is baked almond meringue filled with Tahitian vanilla pastry cream and fresh raspberries.

Our server encouraged us to order the raspberry daquoise, mentioning that it was recently featured on the Food Network.  I had to laugh when I read this quote on Food Network's site "Like a man on the hunt for Bigfoot, Jeff Mauro heads to Milwaukee in search of the legendary giant macaron."

2 - Baking Powder Biscuits

Baking Powder Biscuits are a favorite family recipe.  I don't like using shortening very often, but I only make my grandma's biscuits a couple times a year, and they're just not the same when made with butter.

I finally got to try out the Wisconsin cookie cutter I bought at the Mustard Museum last month, and it worked well as a biscuit cutter, except Door County got a little burned.

3 - Fruits & Vegetables

After a carb-filled Thanksgiving weekend, I felt an urge to eat more fruits and vegetables this week.  For example, yesterday I had pomegranate arils on my oatmeal for breakfast, a large salad with leaf lettuce, carrots and greens onions for lunch, and for dinner I had rutabaga leek soup with cranberry nut muffins for dessert.

4 - Apple Pie Cookies

Apple Pie Cookies were an excellent way to use leftover pie crust this week (I had three leftover crusts which I froze after making raspberry chiffon pie for Thanksgiving).

I pulled one crust out of the freezer in the morning and by noon it was ready to roll out.  These are really easy to make, but they're only for people who love pie crust (like me!) because the ratio of apple to pie is backward from a traditional pie.

5 - Cake Pop Stand

I recently ordered a cake pop stand to display the cake pops I'm making for the MKEfoodies holiday bake sale, which is next weekend!  It was surprisingly easy to put together, just needed a little Goo Gone to remove the label adhesive.

Of course, the real test will come when it's loaded with cake pops.  I hope it works well because my co-workers have been asking me to bring in cake pops again and this stand should make it a lot easier to do so!

  1. Chris asked what I had for dinner when I got home and then I realized I had eaten all the macarons when I was intending to bring him at least one! Oink, oink!
